We’ve been making our own hubs at Hed for since the beginning, and they’ve always been very good – but in 2009 they go way beyond We’ve lavished attention on them and believe they’re the best in the industry.
Sonic hubs start with a forged hub shell. Forging aligns the grain of the aluminum and results in a stronger, lighter hub shell. Not only are the shells forged, even spoke holes are forged into the shell resulting in very strong anchor points for the spokes. After forging hub shells are machined into their final form. Our testing showed that the most important factor in lowering hub drag is accurate bearing alignment. Accordingly, we tightened our machining tolerances for every bearing surface. Inner and outer bearing surfaces are precisely turned. Concentricity is exact too. With such precise surfaces, the bearings line up perfectly with each other, and there is no binding at either the inner or outer bearing race. All the machine time would be wasted without very high quality bearings. Ours are Abec 5, so the fit the bores precisely, and they have 33% more load capacity in the ‘09 Sonics. The result is hubs that feel silky smooth from the first day and wheels that spin in the stand seemingly forever.
